"There are now more than 180,000 active Android developers who have contributed over 50,000 apps to the Android Market."


Meanwhile, Android SDK Tech Lead Xavier Ducrohet offered an in-depth look at some of the enhancements in the latest version of the OS, including:

  • Speed: The Dalvik JIT compiler in Android 2.2 delivers between a 2-5X performance improvement in CPU-bound code vs. Android 2.1.
     
  • Enterprise capabilities: Google has added Exchange capabilities such as account auto-discovery and calendar sync. In addition, device policy management APIs now allow developers to write applications to control the following security features: remote wipe, minimum password and lockscreen timeout.
     
  • Faster, more powerful browser: The V8 JavaScript engine - which is now part of the the Android browser (in 2.2) - results in a 2-3X improvement of JavaScript performance vs. 2.1.
     
  • Rich set of new APIs and services: New data backup APIs allow apps to participate in data backup and restore. Apps can also utilize Android Cloud-Device Messaging to enable mobile alert, send to phone and two-way push sync functionality. 

     
  • Additions to Android Market: The Market currently offers Android application error reports, along with a bug reporting feature.

NASA announced an MMORPG they were working on a while ago, but since that announcement, little has been said about the game.  The NASA MMO is currently named Astronaut: Moon, Mars and Beyond MMO, with very little info being released.  However, they are launching a mini-demo game that looks like it will have some multiplayer.  Moonbase Alpha will launch July 6th and might just give us a taste of what the NASA MMO will look and feel like.
The official website for Moonbase Alpha only has a teaser as of now.  From the trailer, it looks like a cooperative building scenario game.  It’s not really an MMO, but it’s the precursor, so it’s definitely worth a look.

MyWi 4.0 for iOS 4 is all set to get released shortly. Using MyWi 4.0, you will be able to enable tethering on iOS 4 iPhone and iPod touch. The new MyWi 4.0 comes with an array of new features such as battery and power consumption options to save about 30% to 40% of battery life! There is an option to disable the blue pulsing tethering bar on top, which you can convert it into a status bar icon.

You need to have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch to install MyWi 4.0 and get it working. Since MyWi 4.0 has been scheduled for an early release (later today or early tomorrow), we will post more updates on this soon.

Readers report that Apple’s tech support forums originally confirmed that a iOS 4.0.1 software fix addressing the issue would ship early next week (as early as Monday), before the comments were subsequently taken down along with all the other related discussion about the matter.
The fix is expected to address a issue in iOS 4 related to radio frequency calibration of the baseband. Readers who saw the original forum discussions say that the issue is believed to occur when switching frequencies; because the lag is allegedly not calibrated correctly, it results in the device reporting “no service” rather than switching to the frequency with the best signal to noise ratio.
